Shafilea Ahmed went missing last year. The headteacher of a 17-year-old girl whose body was found in a Cumbria river will take part in a police press conference in Warrington on Tuesday. Shafilea Ahmed disappeared six months ago after a holiday in Pakistan during which she was introduced to a potential marriage partner.
At the time she vanished she had been receiving hospital treatment after drinking bleach. Cheshire police confirmed the body was Shafilea's following forensic tests.
Jewellery similar to that owned by the Warrington youngster had been found on the body. Cheshire Police were alerted by Cumbria Police after the body was pulled from the River Kent at Sedgwick, nearly three weeks ago. Shafilea lived with her parents, Iftikhar, 44, and Farzana, 41, in Liverpool Road, Great Sankey, Warrington, Cheshire. Her parents said a gold zigzag bracelet and blue topaz ring found on the body pulled from the river were similar to jewellery owned by their daughter.
The couple were arrested in December on suspicion of abducting their daughter but were released on bail pending further inquiries.
Poignant song lyrics written by Shafilea were read at a press conference by Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati in December. In the poem, Shafilea said: "I was like a normal teenage kid. Didn't ask 2 much. I just wanted to fit in."
